Q: How did you get involved with school clubs and organizations such as TEDxSFU & CMNSU? What advice can you give?

A:
When I first transferred to SFU, I didn’t really know anyone and deep down I knew that best way to meet people was by getting involved in extracurricular activities. As much as good grades are important, experiences are just as important.
You see, I wanted to be a part of something great, something big. I wanted to participate in cool projects and be a part of a group of individuals working to evoke change in themselves and others. I eventually conducted an online search and learned more about the school clubs and organizations I was interested in. When I heard about opportunities to join CMNSU and TEDxSFU, I didn’t hesitate for a moment.

Getting involved in extracurricular activities shows you know how to prioritize and meet deadlines, multitask, have good networking and social skills, and care enough about the world around you to get involved in it. These are all desirable traits in the eyes of a potential employer.

My number one piece of advice is to embrace vulnerability. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Stepping outside my comfort zone and getting involved with TEDxSFU and CMNSU were easily the two best decisions I made in 2017. Both these organizations opened my eyes to the possibilities of my communication degree, not to mention I’ve built long-lasting friendships and working relationships with industry professionals. Students don’t realize that these types of activities on your resume will actually put you ahead of the game when the time comes to finding a job. So I can’t stress this enough. Get involved, be engaged. I promise you won’t regret it!
