CARDS FOR THE COMMUNITY - 2022 Event Recap

This past month we wrapped up our last event of the Fall 2022 semester, Cards for the community. A thoughtful, giving and cozy event that brought together students and faculty to celebrate the holidays before the chaos of finals season kicked in.

We reached out to our amazing Events team to share their experience planning the philanthropic event. From securing the venue to thoroughly planning the purpose of our charitable giving, and much more in between, our Events team worked passionately through midterm season to ensure the success of the event. Below, two of our Events Coordinators, Kristen Wong & Sandra Chen, offer insight on their experience:

What was the thought process behind the organization of the event?

“As 2023 comes to an end and the holidays are fast approaching, we wanted to host one final memorable event. It was aimed not only for communication students and faculty, but those who may be facing hardship during the tougher months of the year. The thought process behind the title “Cards for the Community'' was to create an initiative to spread some holiday cheer for the community around us! As this season is all about giving, we decided what a better way to give back by sharing kind words, silly jokes and big smiles”. - Kristen Wong, Events Coordinator

What charities were being supported and can you talk a little bit about the donations that were collected during the event?

“We collected donations for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC). Accepted donations include blankets, gloves, winter shoes, towels, rain gear, perfume, razors, and toothbrushes. DEWC supports women, children, and seniors by providing refuge from violence and homelessness. We also wrote holiday greeting cards for residents at a Burnaby senior home.

Attendees of the event wrote thoughtful messages to brighten seniors’ days. We wrote a total of 100 cards for the seniors and delivered them the weekend of the event! We had an excellent turnout and received both cash and in-kind donations for DEWC. We had bags filled with clothing, hygiene products, skincare, and hair products.” - Sandra Chen, Events Coordinator

Event Sponsors

This would be the perfect time to thank our amazing sponsors for the event. Connecting with sponsors is one of the most integral parts of any event that we put together. We are always thankful for our sponsors, through our sponsorships we are able to connect SFU students and organizations in unique and exciting ways. This year we were thrilled to work with great sponsors for our wrap up event of the year, Cards for the community.

A big thank you to Rio Theatre, VNYSA Yoga Studio and The School of Communication. Our sponsors' contributions are vital in allowing CMNSU to continue putting on successful events for the SFU community and we cannot succeed without the generosity of our sponsors and want to extend a warm thank you for all their support.
