As if we couldn’t get enough black girl magic in 2020. Black women have dominated popular culture, from fashion, hair and beauty, dance, and athletics. More specifically, black women have been thriving in the music industry more than ever; bringing us record breaking hits, empowering shower anthems, quarantine bops, and not to mention the ultimate songs to record our latest TikTok dances. To refresh your memory on some of the milestones in the black female artist genre this year: Nicki Minaj brought us a fun remix of Doja Cat’s “Say So” and at the same moment, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé whipped up a quarantine CLASSIC with the “Savage Remix”. Don’t forget the head-turning rap track, “WAP”, brought to us by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. With four months left to this unprecedented year, the potential for more incredible records, and jaw-dropping collaborations are infinite, as the essence of black girl magic continues to flourish beyond our headphones and speakers.

Most of us can’t help but indulge in these catchy mainstream tunes; considering black women are extremely underrepresented in such a male-dominant industry, her exposure within the music industry becomes highly competitive. To combat this lack of representation, and promote pro-blackness, I’ve compiled a growing list of underrated black female artists that you need to add to your favourite spotify playlists!

The playlist is collaborative, so feel free to add any of your favourite black female artists, whose talents aren’t necessarily at the forefront of streaming platforms and popular media. Enhance your music taste and continue to amplify black female artists by following the playlist! Let me know on my Instagram what your favourite track was on the list!

Beyonc é isn’t going to ask us again…. Who Run The World?.... GIRLS!
