A beginner’s guide to the horror movie genre
The cinematic world of horror stories has become integral to my life for the past two years. Funnily enough, I was once a very squeamish individual who made jokes at every point in the movie to avoid my fear. Annoying? Yes, I know. After certain events in my life drove me to want to feel something other than sadness, I discovered what I had been missing out on. Soon, a love of horror movies blossomed. I know some save the scares for October, but for me, spooky season is a year-round event. Below is a list of my favourite horror movies, in no order, that I recommend to anyone wanting to get into the genre or a shared list that would make any horror movie fanatic approve.

10 Cloverfield Lane
One of the first horror movies I was introduced to was 10 Cloverfield Lane. Without revealing any spoilers, it was certainly not heading where I thought the story was heading. A woman, grief-stricken from a breakup, finds herself in a car accident where a mysterious man rescues her but refuses to leave, claiming that it is the end of the world and that he has saved her life alone. The movie is more suspenseful than scary. However, it's a great starter for someone wanting to get into the genre but with a little more amp on the frightening side combined with science fiction and abduction themes.

Rear Window
This one is my all-time favourite movie, so excuse the bias. However, this is not only a classic Alfred Hitchcock film but reveals insight into how movies were shot during the 1950s. It plays with psychology in how the plot moves and has the viewer on their toes, wondering where the film will go. It also takes place in one location, a New York apartment complex, throughout the whole story. It also plays on the ideas of self-defence in a vulnerable situation. Highly recommend it for beginners and horror movie enthusiasts looking for a different kind of thrill.

The Strangers
Okay, this one is a definite step up from the last two mentioned. What makes The Strangers so scary is that not only is it based on a very rational fear: home invasion. The whole movie is chilling, especially during parts when the couple isn't aware of who is in their home, but the audience is familiar with it. An excellent film to scream at the protagonists on screen when they have no clue of what is happening. I like the Strangers because not only is it playing on a possible scenario, but it gives you the creeps all the way until the end. Recommend watching with a friend, and indeed not home alone!

The list would only be complete if it had a Jordan Peele film on it. Peele as a directorhas created some fantastic films, but Us really takes the cake regarding genuine scares. If you think the idea of having a doppelganger plotting against you to take over your life isn't enough, get ready for the incredible twists and turns this movie will put you through. I was sus of seeing people hold hands for about a week after watching this movie, and you'll understand why if you've seen it or decided to watch it. I also enjoy how Peele adds his own touches of humour in the movie, so even when you're watching from under a blanket, you'll also have moments to laugh while watching.

Okay, I can understand that perhaps Ari Asters' films are talked about too much. But for excellent reasoning. Many folks focus more on Midsommar when discussing horror movies, but Hereditary is a much more intense and exciting film. Not only is it clever story wise, but the easter eggs and interest suck you into the story. It is a shame that thrillers and horror movies aren't a category at the Oscars because Toni Collette smashed her performance. Hereditary is also the first on this list that incorporates supernatural horror, a common theme for terrifying films. Hereditary is a good starter for this specific subsection of Horror movies.
There you have it. Five movies would be great for any beginner to begin their new dark obsession that touches on all fears, from supernatural and science fiction to indulging in living fears. If you're ready to graduate after watching these, tuck into the big dogs like Insidious, the Conjuring and Sinister. Good luck, have fun and don't overthink what goes bump at night.
