5 Ways to Set Yourself Up for a Successful Semester

The start of a new semester is a chance to hit the reset button. Whether you're a first year student or graduate student, there's always something invigorating about the clean slate a new semester offers. To make the most of this opportunity and set yourself up for success, it's important to establish good habits and strategies right from the beginning. In this blog, we will explore five effective ways to set yourself up for a successful semester.

  1. Set Clear Goals and Priorities

The first step to a successful semester is setting clear, achievable goals. What do you want to accomplish? There may be specific grades you're aiming for, or perhaps your goal is to make new connections. Take the time to write down your objectives and prioritize them. Writing down the specific steps it may take to achieve your goals may also be helpful. Once you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, it's easier to stay focused and motivated throughout the semester.

  2. Have a Good Study Space

Your study environment plays a huge role in your academic success. Ensure your study space is organized, comfortable, and free from distractions. Arrange your materials, textbooks, and supplies in a way that promotes efficiency. Consider investing in quality lighting and a comfortable chair to make your study sessions more productive. Finding your favourite spots to study on campus, or in other spaces outside your home is also crucial if you're someone like me who sometimes needs a change in environment. A well-organized study space can help you concentrate better and stay on track with your coursework.

  3. Establish Schedules

Consistency is key. Create a study schedule that aligns with your goals and commitments. Allocate specific time slots for studying, attending classes, and personal activities. Be realistic about your time management, and don't forget to schedule breaks to avoid burnout. Put as much as you can in your calendar, ideally one on your phone that you'll see constantly. My calendar is colour-coded and filled with everything from assignment due dates to concert dates. Using digital tools or physical planners and whiteboards can be extremely helpful to keep you on track.

  4. Engage in Class

Active participation in your classes can significantly impact your understanding of the material and your overall performance. This does not just mean speaking in class, but attending classes regularly, arriving on time, and staying focused and actively engaged during lectures. Take notes, ask questions, and seek clarification when needed. Being an active learner not only helps you grasp the content better, making it easier for you write essays and exams, but this also builds a positive relationship with your professor.

  5. Seek Help and Support When Necessary

Don't be afraid to ask for help when you encounter challenges. Whether it's a difficult concept in a course or personal issues affecting your studies, reach out to your professors, academic advisors, or peers. SFU offers many amazing resources and services to help you with these struggles. For example, the My SSP app is a great way to access free and convenient counseling whenever you need. Seeking help early, and being open to your professors about the accommodations you may need, can prevent problems from snowballing and ensure a smoother semester.
