Angela Vannatter is a Communications graduate with a drive so strong, there’s no telling how far she’ll go.

Angela first decided to pursue Communications in her second semester, when she realized her interests in media, social relations, and the arts could be combined into one great field. Although she had yet to officially declare Communications as her major, she mentally knew that was the path that she would take; plus, she was already in the CMNSU.

Through CMNSU, Angela found herself at Careers In Communications (CIC) with Laura Murray. Laura Murray is the founding partner of Murray Patterson Marketing Group (MPMG), an agency that represents arts and culture clients. Being a theatre kid, Angela knew she wanted to work with Laura and MPMG. Through the power of conversation, networking and making herself known to Laura, Angela was able to secure a job with MPMG in her second year, as a Communications Coordinator, specializing in media relations, influencer marketing, and digital promotions. Now, Angela works as a freelance Communications Specialist contracted by MPMG, in addition to having a contract with Artist’s Legal Outreach, a law office that helps artists attain free legal advice.

Angela is also the co-creator of Twenty Something, a podcast about the trials and triumphs of twenty-somethings and how to navigate them in such a culturally significant time. Angela and Eman (co-creator) always felt they needed an outlet to channel all of their creativity into, and found that the power in being a twenty something was an asset they needed to share.

Want to Start your own Creative Project?

From my conversation with Angela, I was able to gain insight on the reality of starting your own creative project. Nowadays, podcasts, youtube channels and blogs are so common, it can be hard to find the motivation to take on the process of creating your own. However, you should not let this fact hinder your opportunity to produce something fun, interesting or meaningful. I asked Angela about her experience in co-creating the Twenty Something podcast, and here is her advice:

  1. Discover Your Why: What purpose do you want to fulfill in your creative project? Making people laugh? Making people think? Making products for people? Ensure you have a passion surrounding your why, so as to keep you driven.

  2. Use Your Network: Using your network is invaluable. Your friends, family, co-workers and peers can assist you in your trajectory. Whether that is asking for advice, or asking if they can be a guest on your youtube channel, your network is one of your greatest assets.

  3. Rediscover Your Why: Remember why you embarked on this journey, and re-light that fire inside that kept you motivated, determined and eager to start this creative project.

  4. Be Realistic: Set realistic goals and timelines for yourself. Try your best not to take on more than you can chew, and plan accordingly to your pre-existing schedule.

  5. Try Not to Drive Yourself Insane: I think this one is self explanatory. A creative or passion project is a big undertaking. It can be both mentally and physically exhausting, especially if you are a student. Take each day as it comes, be kind to yourself and try your absolute best to not go insane.
