A Year in Review: 2019/2020 CMNSU Events

Throughout 2019 and early 2020, CMNSU managed to throw a few great events prior to Covid-19.

This included our second year of Evolve, which was a sold-out event kickstarting Fall semester with s’mores, a donut wall, a make-your-own hot chocolate jar station, awesome sponsors like Redbull and Body Energy Club, plus some great CMNS alumni speakers and more!

Following Evolve, we put on a winter movie-themed holiday social to wrap up the Fall semester, decorating our School of Communication lounge to the 9s and crafting a cookie decorating station for whoever could stop by during finals studying.

As we geared up for our annual Careers in Communications event (CIC), we decided to add in a pre-CIC workshop. This event was hosted by Andrea Ng, (@vancouverprgirl) founder of Glo Media, and was a hit with CMNS students. Andrea provided them with 3 key tips on how to make the most out of their CMNS degree and how to prepare for life after graduation.

The tips:

  • How to brand yourself

  • What are industries looking for?

  • Networking 101

Unfortunately, just a few days after the workshop, the world halted due to Covid-19 and our final event for the year, Careers in Communications, was cancelled. Although our team was disappointed, the safety of ourselves, our peers, and the community at SFU and beyond is always our top priority. Covid-19 has put many people in extremely difficult situations and poses a massive safety risk to everyone and has changed many lives in unthinkable ways. We are looking forward to holding events in-person again soon when it is safe for all.
