Three Tips to Become A Successful Student at SFU

Success is subjective to everyone. To me, it means being happy and accomplished in my personal, work, and academic goals. Here are three things to remember if you want to be a successful and satisfied student at SFU. Here are some resources to help you on your journey!

1. Get out!

Run errands, go hiking, and explore! Whether if it’s with someone or with yourself, it’s important to get out of your living quarters every once in a while, for relaxation and peace of mind. Either way, keeping yourself active allows you to grow when you are confronted with new challenges, whether it is on or off campus. It might even lead you to meeting new friends!

2. Persevere in the face of adversity

Take one day at a time. Focus on doing one thing instead of thinking about all the other things that you have to get done. Remember that time will always move forward and so will you. You have time to do things, trust me. Just pace yourself and don’t get down on yourself if things don’t go according to plan. The future is unpredictable, so take advantage of this knowledge and focus on the big picture! Plan around the idea of uncertainty and you will be okay.

3. Take care of the body and brain

Take breaks when you need them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Know your load and be compassionate to yourself when you tire out. Treat yourself like you would a friend. I cannot stress how important it is to get comfortable with yourself in post-secondary life. Becoming your own best friend creates an independent space for introspection where we can reflect and evolve!

Keeping these three tips in mind while navigating your years at SFU will help you thrive and prosper under different circumstances. Have faith in yourself and remember that when in doubt, ask for help. There are so many resources at SFU created to guide you through your most formative years such as SFU Student Learning Commons, SFU Advising, SFU Health and Counselling, and even more with just a click or Google Search!

P.S. A calm playlist to listen to when in transit/studying/relaxing!
