5 Horror Movies to Binge This Halloween
The spooky season is upon us, and there’s no better way to get into the Halloween spirit than bingeing horror movies. What’s better than putting on your comfiest clothes, grabbing a bowl of popcorn or your favourite candy, and screaming at the top of your lungs? Nothing!
Here are my top five horror movies to binge this Halloween:
Us (2019), directed by Jordan Peele
TL;DR: Us is about the Wilson family who are attacked by mysterious figures in red - who look exactly like them.
Why I love this movie: Black people are often not the protagonists of horror movies. There’s sometimes a black character, but they are usually killed in the first thirty minutes. As a black person who loves horror, it was refreshing to see people like me on the screen.
Scary meter: 4/5
The Call (2020), directed by Lee Chung-Hyeon
TL;DR: This South Korean movie is about a woman in the present, who connects with a serial killer living twenty years in the past, through a phone call which interchanges their fates.
Why I love this movie: I love this movie because it’s South Korean. It’s also an absolute mindf*ck. That's all.
Scary meter: 3/5
Hush (2016), directed by Mike Flanagan
TL;DR: A deaf writer who lives alone in the woods (because that’s a perfectly sensible thing to do) must fight for her life when a masked killer appears in her window.
Why I love this movie: Representation. A huge chunk of the movie is in complete silence to immerse the viewer in the realities of people who are deaf. I was on the edge of my seat as I watched the woman try to defeat her killer who she could not hear coming.
Scary meter: 3.5/5
A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski
TL;DR: A family struggles to live in silence in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by deadly monsters who are attracted to noise.
Why I love this movie: The setting, the enemy and the protagonists make up the perfect recipe for a good horror movie. What more can you ask for?
Scary meter: 4/5
Coraline (2009), directed by Henry Selick
TL;DR: A stop-motion animation about a girl named Coraline who discovers a hidden door that leads to a fantasy version of her life, where she discovers not all that glitters is gold.
Why I love this movie: Animation is my second favourite movie genre after horror. It’s only natural that an animated horror film is on this list. Also, it’s creepy but not so creepy that you can’t sleep, making it the perfect scary movie to watch with family.
Scary meter: 2/5
